BACKGROUND

I am at heart an engineer and the path to NUI Galway reads as follows :

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Research interests include Quality of Service/Quality of Experience (QoS/QoE) of Internet Multimedia along with supporting protocols and technologies, Distributed Synchronised Time & Timing, SmartGrid, Energy & Environmental Informatics and Cybersecurity for Safety Critical Systems.

My PhD focused on the potential for enhanced VoIP (Voice over IP) Quality of Service (QoS) through use of synchronised time. This research was carried out in conjunction with the Performance Engineering Laboratory (PEL) at the School of Computer Science, University College Dublin. My industrial background is in Power Engineering Systems and this expertise and interest is reflected in my research within the broadly based Ryan Institute with particular focus on the Energy Research Centre at NUI Galway.

In the context of Distributed Synchronised Time, I am involved in two US-based projects. The first is Time Aware Applications, Computers & Communication Systems (TAACCS) whereby Time Awareness can bring significant benefits to a wide range of application domains. See www.taaccs.org for more details. Secondly, US NIST have launched a Cyber Physical Systems Public Working Group where I serve as Academic co-chair on the timing strand. See www.cps-pwg.org for details. In context of QoS and QoE, I represent Ireland in two related EU COST projects. See http://www.cost-across.nl and http://www.qualinet.eu .

See also www.osna-solutions.com for details of research into Cybersecurity for ICS.
